World of Corvette

Author: Jerry Burton

The Chevrolet Corvette is one of America's oldest and most revered automotive nameplates… and more than 55 years later, it's not about to slow down.

That's right. The Corvette has been around longer than the Bel Air, the Biscayne, the Malibu, the Chevette, the Corvair, the Camaro, the Nova, and even the Impala. A two-seat sports car from Chevrolet, one of America's largest purveyors of family transportation? Who'd have thought?

Owner Stories

Guy Larsen

Guy Larsen knows his Corvettes. He has to, as a division director for judges at the Bloomington Gold show every year in Illinois.

"I oversee the judges for the C4, C5, C6 cars," he explained. "But I also talk to the owners, and make sure they're having fun and understand the scoring."

Tom Ligouri

As a kid, Tom Ligouri watched "Route 66" and dreamed of driving a Corvette of his own. In 1969, he got his chance and the car has by his side ever since.

Tom was just 21 when he picked up his LeMans Blue convertible at a dealership in Langhorne, Pennsylvania. It came equipped with a black vinyl hardtop, black leather interior, a 350/350 engine, and close-ratio manual transmission. "It was gorgeous," he recalled.

  1. I own two Corvettes, a 1981, and a 1980 Convertible (yes that is correct, Convertible!) Wonderful cars, fun, affordable and reliable cars. Phenomenal!

  2. Ron McKinney

We have a beautiful Corvette also it a 1968 black on black (was green) with 47,000 miles. I bough it in 1970 and it had 22,000 miles on it. It is a 427 tri power with a four speed munce tran. I love the Vette and wouldn't trade it for a farm in Ga.

  3. Great information. I hope you make this avaialble under "resources" or sell it as a CD. Very nice!

  4. Just one more place to relive my past Corvettes and keep my dream alive of owning another Vette someday.

  5. We have two beautiful corvettes. A 73 Bright Corvette Yellow, bought new. It has 13600 miles on it. Not that I don't love driving it, just didn't find the time. All original but for several new batteries, new brakes, tires (old ones cracked but still have them?) and mufflers and tail pipes. The 2004 C5 has 8300 miles and is a lot more comfortable, faster and I love the magnetic suspension system. Its quality is much better but the 73's styling is sooo-- sweet!

  6. Make this a permanent fixture under your "resources" tab!

  7. Honney Very true! Makes a cahgne to see someone spell it out like that. :)

Great article and we love our Corvette Roadster but, the 1957 Corvette was not the first production, normally aspirated car to offer one horsepower per cubic inch. Our 1956 Jaguar XK-140MC Roadster made 210 HP with its 210 CI engine as did the earlier XK-120s equipped with the C Type head. Thank you for listening and thank you for providing affordable Classic car insurance for us hobbyists.

  29. Muhammad The driver in the C-6 broke his tires loose on the gear ngcahe, they hadn't even hit 50 mph yet, probably never lifted off the throttle, then overcompensated, that's the only way you can lose it like that going so slow. The driver in the C-5 would've been fine if he just kept on the gas, Instead he lifted off keeping himself parallel with the other car as it careening out of control, and wound up getting his car wiped out. Geez F-ing moron alert, typical of the kind of people who buy Corvettes, they have no feel for driving, and they bought the one overpowered car that is totally unforgiving of such basic mistakes.

I have owned my 1961 Corvette since 1967 and drove it daily until I retired in March of 2000. It had 96452 miles on it by then. I recently restored the 1961 and a 1963 split window coupe and 1964 covertible which belonged to a friend who talked me into the undertaking. It took all summer to comlete the three cars in our spare time. I am returning my vette to the road as a seasonal daily driver.

I have a Bright Blue 1976 Corvette with the L-82 engine, a/c, power windows, steering, tilt-tele, turbo 400 and the optional made in Mexico aluminum wheels. I replaced both the front and rear polyurethane bumpers with fiberglass ones and had it repainted using the original Corvette bright blue that was on it. I have almost 70,000 miles on it. So, what is unique about my Vette? I bought it in November 1975. It’s truly one of the family. It’s older than my two kids and has been with me longer that my EX

My first one was a "95" coupe with a 6 speed stick. Wish I had it back. I now have a 2004 Mag Red Coupe. On top of being fun to drive, both are good gas mileage cars. We have met some of the greatest people and made life long friends with other Corvette owners. Our local club, Razorback Corvette Club, can be found on the net at www.razorvette.net. We have activities for all drivers including the upcoming Christmas parades.

There is nothing--absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in my 1996 Collectors Edition Convertible" My father & I began rebuilding a 1958 Corvette (basket case) in 1960, by the time I was 16 in 1962 it was my first car & I have had a Corvette in my garage ever since - a 1960, a 1962, and a 1966 before I bought the 1996 in December of 1995. I've read numerous articles of guys who have bought & owned corvettes, restored them and stored them away for "what". I sent in some information on the 4 corvettes I ownd and how I repaired some issues on them and what I did to them when they were completed, having given them to my kids. I asked if there was an interst in this story and never received a reply yet I felt my story was eaual to those that found a barn find & restorered it. If Haggerty is interested in my story, I'd be happy to tell all, if not, then so be it. Thanx for letting me vent my story.

I have a 78 Corvette that has lasted me through a divorce, honeymoon, and another divorce. It's the only thing that has been loyal in my life. I want to be burried in it.

  52. Duane Hinkley Harrison, TN

My first corvette is a 1976 coupe. The color is the buckskin with dark brown interrior & it had 65,000 miles. I bought it from my wife's niece who was the 2nd owner. It's all original except with the typical replacement of battery & tires. My second was a 1973 coupe, white with a light tan interrior that was pretty shabby. The motor & trans were original but the rear axel had been replaced. I had the interrior replaced to the red color of the 1972 models, the blood red of 73 was not what I wanted. I also had some "trim" work done on the motor to spruce it's looks and replaced the radiator and added a trans cooler. The 3rd one I bought was a 1977 coupe, dark red with white interrior. Another that was no longer original. The owner had also put in a 4.11 gear that made the car fast at the line but not a good long distance driver so I replaced it with a 3.25(?) gear that was still a bit more than the original but it also made it a nice driver. Now come the best part.....the 1973 is the birth year of my daugter and the 1977 is the birth year of my youngest son so for Christmas last year I gave them the cars. Both have promised (& so far proven) to be proud and respectful owners of these two classic cars. My 4th is a 1988 red with white top convertible that only had 36,000 miles on it. I love these cars and have already told my family that when I pass on, the 1976 and the 1988 must remain in the family. It'll be up to them to argue over who gets what...lol.

Yes another route 66 kid! First dream come true was in the 70-s while serving in the Navy I bought my first Vette, a 1963 convertible. In the 80's still Navy a 1965 coupe and in the 90's-now 2 sharks and my curnnet 1964 coupe. The sharks were neet but I love the Midyears most of all. Much more roomier inside.
